New name springs to the top after volatile month

Published: 04/06/2019

With several of the more established names enduring a difficult month, May’s Toptipsters table has an unfamiliar look with a number of newer services showcasing their talents. LB Tipster, in only their second month, claimed top position with a return of 44.54 points. TV Racing Tips, who joined in January, were second on 35.90 points, while fellow rookies Acetipsters (10.80 points) and Sovereign Racing (6.25 points) finished third and fourth. Best Value Racing Service, a comparative veteran of seven months standing, also posted a small profit to finish in fifth position.

The opening phase of the month was a roller-coaster ride for LB Tipster with a four-winner haul on 6 May offsetting losses incurred during the previous five days. Further losing days followed before two healthy winners at rain-soaked Chester on 10 May – 16/1 Sha La La La Lee and 11/1 Aquarium – heralded a more settled phase. Subsequent winners included 7/1 Sextent and 9/1 Cape Byron (both at Ascot, 11 May), 8/1 Magnetic Charm (York, 17 May), 7/1 Khaadem (Newbury, 18 May), 9/1 Muraaqeb (Chelmsford City, 23 May) and 8/1 Majeste (Hamilton Park, 29 May).

TV Racing Tips, who made an impression back in February with a 61.50-point gain, recovered from a lean spell to post a May return of 35.90 points. The poor spring form continued into May despite the Chester success of Aquarium (11/1, 10 May). But with another losing month beckoning, there was a dramatic reversal of fortune on 25 May. In the space of fifteen minutes 108 points had been earned, firstly by the Irish 2,000 Guineas win of the Charlie Hills-trained Phoenix Of Spain (20/1, Leopardstown) and then by the York success of veteran sprinter Duke Of Firenze (16/1). The month also ended with an Epsom winner, Mountain Angel (4/1) which helped push the profits on.

Acetipsters third month with Toptipsters ended with a 10.80-point profit, built around the 6/1 Palace House Stakes success of Mabs Cross (Newmarket, 4 May).

Ten winners gave Sovereign Racing a 6.25-point May profit (18% strike-rate). Eight of the ten returned prices of 4/1 or above with Elite Icon (15/2, Musselburgh, 3 May) and Carnwennan (7/1, York, 16 May) leading the way.

Best Value Tipping Service made it five winning months out of seven with 18/1 Atalanta Queen (Southwell, 1 May), 14/1 Muchly (Ascot, 1 May), and a brace of 12/1 advices, Show Me The Bubbly (Bath, 6 May) and Breden (Newbury 18 May) standing out. After such extravagances, the overall profit was a miserly 0.78 points. This service advises selections to win, but subscribers who went each way would have posted a healthy profit as selections priced at 25/1, 20/1, 18/1, three at 16/1, two at 14s, two at 12s and four at 11s were all placed.

Thanks to their recent efforts, LB Tipster now lead the overall table with 37.54 points. Sprint  Specialiser have slipped to second (36.09 points) with Early Price Profits also dropping a place to third (10.89 points).
